Computer and Network Security
Primary Contact (Computer Security): Scott Delinger
Primary Contact (Network Security): Larry Coulson
Computer and network security has become a big focus, with articles in mainstream media often spewing hyperbole rather than information. Make no mistake: several computers within Chemistry have been broken into over the past five years. We've make it harder, but it will never be impossible. We can only make it too difficult to bother, while trying to ensure that the security measures do not impede legitimate use. The Department, through the IT group, works hard on keeping up on security topics and determining our exposure to these ever-changing risks. If you need in from home to a given computer and can't seem to manage, it's likely that the firewall is helping us stay secure by locking you out. Talk to Larry about access.
Securing computers within Chemistry is a focus of Scott's. We can help you tune the access to your computer so only you have access, or you allow only the access you need others to have.
Please submit your request to our Help Desk. The Help Desk automatically alerts the correct individuals of the request. If you cannot reach the Help Desk (computer completely inoperative, network down), call one of the primary contacts for this service. The Help Desk is designed to help you and us track requests, provide a forum for Frequently Asked Questions, and help us keep you apprised of our progress on your requests.
